Rad je imao za cilj pomo\u0107i \u017eenama s mutiranim mitohondrijima da imaju bebe bez rizika od preno\u0161enja genetskih poreme\u0107aja. Ljudi naslje\u0111uju sve svoje mitohondrije od svoje majke, tako da \u0161tetne mutacije u \u201cbaterijama\u201d mogu utjecati na svu djecu koju \u017eena ima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Za pogo\u0111ene \u017eene prirodno za\u010de\u0107e \u010desto je kockanje. Neka se djeca mogu roditi zdrava jer naslje\u0111uju samo mali dio mutiranih mitohondrija. Ali drugi mogu naslijediti daleko vi\u0161e i razviti te\u0161ke, progresivne i \u010desto smrtonosne bolesti. Otprilike jedno od 6.000 beba ima mitohondrijske poreme\u0107aje.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ve\u0107ina od 20.000 ljudskih gena smotana je u jezgri gotovo svake stanice u tijelu. Ali oko svake jezgre nalaze se tisu\u0107e mitohondrija s vlastitim genima. Kada pravilno funkcioniraju, mitohondriji osiguravaju vitalnu energiju za stanice koje \u010dine na\u0161e organe. Mutacije koje o\u0161te\u0107uju mitohondrije najvi\u0161e utje\u010du na tkiva gladna energije: mozak, srce, mi\u0161i\u0107e i jetru. Oni se mogu nemilosrdno pogor\u0161avati kako dijete raste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proces ima nekoliko koraka. Prvo se sperma oca koristi za oplodnju jajnih stanica oboljele majke i zdrave donorice. Nuklearni genetski materijal iz jaja\u0161ca donora zatim se uklanja i zamjenjuje onim iz oplo\u0111enog jaja\u0161ca para. Dobivena jajna stanica ima puni set kromosoma oba roditelja, ali nosi zdrave mitohondrije donora umjesto neispravnih maj\u010dinih. To se zatim usa\u0111uje u maternicu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Postupak nije bez rizika. Nedavna istra\u017eivanja su otkrila da se u nekim slu\u010dajevima maleni broj abnormalnih mitohondrija koji se neizbje\u017eno prenose iz maj\u010dinog jaja\u0161ca u donorsko jaje mo\u017ee umno\u017eiti dok je beba u maternici. Takozvana reverzija ili obrat mogla bi dovesti do bolesti djeteta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRazlog za\u0161to se obrat vidi u stanicama neke djece ro\u0111ene nakon MRT procedura, ali ne i kod druge, nije u potpunosti shva\u0107en\u201d, rekao je Dagan Wells, profesor reproduktivne genetike na Sveu\u010dili\u0161tu u Oxfordu koji je sudjelovao u istra\u017eivanju.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u017dene s mitohondrijskim mutacijama mogu izbje\u0107i preno\u0161enje poreme\u0107aja usvajanjem ili IVF-om s donorskom jajnom stanicom. Ili, da bi imale genetski srodnu djecu, oboljele \u017eene mogu podvrgnuti pregledu IVF embrija na mitohondrijske mutacije. Iako je djeluje u mnogim slu\u010dajevima, ono smanjuje rizik umjesto da ga potpuno uklanja, a ne mo\u017ee pomo\u0107i kada svi embriji koje \u017eena proizvede imaju visoko mutirane mitohondrije.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Velika Britanija nije prva zemlja koja je stvorila bebe od MDT-a. Godine 2016., ameri\u010dki lije\u010dnik najavio je prvi porod MDT-om u svijetu nakon lije\u010denja \u017eene iz Jordana koja je nosila mitohondrijske mutacije koje uzrokuju smrtonosno stanje zvano Leighov sindrom.
